Incorporating mosaic tiles into your home décor will add bit of vibrancy and color like no other tile. But rather than simply buying a ready-made mosaic piece, turn your shopping spree into a fun and creative DIY project! Head to Buildzone’s online store and troll through their mosaic tile range. And then follow these easy steps on how you can make a mosaic at home.
The first step on the journey to Buildzone DIY mosaic involves designing your artwork. Forget about whether you have an artist buried within or not…to be an artist, all you need is a little inspiration! Books on mosaic are a good start. Find what you like and what you think you can pull off. Then decide what you want to mosaic. A mirror? Will it be in or outdoors? For indoor applications, you can try a tile adhesive. For outdoors, try cement-based. Finally, draw your design onto your chosen surface.
The next step is choosing your tiles – Buildzone has ceramic, glass and porcelain – and laying them down. You can either smash the tiles or cut them. You’ll need a pair of safety goggles for either of these, as well as, a hammer for the former or a nipper and/or cutter for the latter. Sort your broken tiles by color or by shape. Then spread the adhesive evenly over your surface using a tiling trowel. Buildzone has a range. Finally, press your first mosaic tile into your center spot and begin tiling!
After the adhesive has dried, it’s time to begin grouting. A cement-based tile grout is ideal for this. Ensure that you follow manufacturer’s instructions when you’re mixing it. Scoop some grout using the trowel or a gloved hand onto the center spot. Gently scrape using the trowel and shove the grout in the gaps. Scrape off any excess grout from the tiles. Let the grout set for about 5 minutes then check it by rubbing a palm across the top of your project. If grout smudges, it is not ready. And, finally, wipe with a damp sponge to smooth out the grout and clean off any excess. Enjoy your Buildzone mosaic!
