So Lets talk bedrooms! Bedrooms in our opinions are the most intimate spaces in the house. This is the room in which you spend most of your time. It’s where you go to relax, sleep, cuddle, escape… the list goes on. Naturally, being such an intimate space, and one that isn’t necessarily seen by many other people, we are inclined to decorate the bedroom for ourselves, which as it happens, works out perfectly with 2011’s new trend of personalizing your home!

As with all décor this year, we are being urged to express ourselves, take chances, and be a little bolder with our décor! You’re being encouraged to put more “you” into your home and the trends are all very supportive! Many of the rules implemented to “neutralize” your home have now been tossed away.

Here are a few new trends for Bedroom Décor that are sure to give you more freedom when it comes to bringing the “youness” to your bedroom:

Mix and match

As we have mentioned in previous articles, matchy matchy is a huge no no right now! Mixing and matching your furniture is a great way to introduce a more personal and eclectic feel to your bedroom. Now you can haul out your granny’s old wrought iron mirror and pair it with that chest of pine drawers you got on sale at the second hand store! Oh, by the way, did we mention that second hand or “upcycled” furniture is huge now too?

Colour

Colour is a great way to bring personality into your bedroom. Soothing pastels have always been recommended for bedrooms as a way to promote tranquility and calm, but this season’s newest trend is to do what you want! So if you are a pastel kind of person, go for it. But if you aren’t now you can go for it too! You no longer need to be held back by neutrals or bland colouring. Go bright white with splashes of bold colour! Or go sultry and dark… you get to choose whatever tickles your fancy! Bedroom colours are all important.

Wall paper

Something that the décor Industry is bringing back into style in 2011 is wallpaper. For a long time we have seen wallpaper as a tacky or dull throwback from the 60’s and 70’s, but wallpaper has come back with a bang and there are some seriously beautiful wallpapers doing the rounds! Use it on only one wall to create a feature, perhaps behind the bed to draw attention to the bed itself, but definitely don’t count wallpaper out!

Dark wood furniture

While we have discussed the mix and match phenomenon and how it allows for us to play with a variety of finishes, textures, colours etc, it is note worthy to mention that as far as 2011’s choice for wooden bedroom furniture is concerned, dark wood is high up on the new trend list. So if you are going to get something new (or upcycled) look out for the darker woold furnishings this year, not forgetting recycled furniture.

Obvious storage

Another new trend for Bedroom Décor in 2011 is the obvious storage. For too long we have hidden our storage behing built in cupboards and underbed boxes. The idea this year is to make a feature out of your storage. Draw attention to it. Find a beautiful armoire to position against an empty wall or put a blanket chest at the bottom of the bed.

Lighting

And lastly lighting! This years new trends for lighting are various, which is great for personalizing your bedroom décor to you tastes! Top f the list though is more natural light, so big windows, sky lights and mirrors to reflect the light fromt eh windows are in. Also at the top of the list is the feature light. Drawing attention to your lighting and making a feature of it is a great new trend for bedroom decor. Whether you opt for an opulent chandelier or go for quirky LED’s, you no longer have to settle for the standard bedside and overhead lamp!
