One of this season’s biggest trends in terms of home decor is eco design. Now eco design encompasses everything from using energy efficient bulbs to painting with eco friendly paint, from decorating with wood instead of plastic to recycling or upcycling old items for new uses.
Upcycling is a brilliant way of digging out old things, inherited things, used things and converting them into something new, different and wonderful. We can now buy glass tiles for out bathrooms and mosaics, made of recycled glass, or we can buy tables made of reconstituted timber. But one need not only buy these things! One can make them too!
I was recently doing a search for interesting headboard ideas to talk about, and I stumbled across images of the most wonderfully hot upcycled headboards. I just couldn’t resist. I had to show you! So if you are looking for new and interesting ways of updating your bedroom, and you want to be eco-friendly and go in for some eco design, you must look at these great ideas!
This headboard has been made with old hardcover book covers, painted of course to match the rest of the room’s décor. Whether for a childs room, guest room, or even your own if you are a book worm, this is a great idea for upcycling old, damaged books! I just love the way the patchwork pf books echoes the patchwork of the quilt on the bed. Very eclectic!
Here someone has used an old chalkboard as a headboard. This is a wonderful way to create a simple black backdrop, or to have a little fun with a partner, leaving notes, drawings etc on the board. You could also leave notes for yourself!
How about an old door? In this picture the decorator has simply repainted an old door and placed it behind the bed.
I love the concept of using an old bookshelf as a headboard! This is a great idea! Painting it to match the room and adding the distresses wooden columns on either side of the bed is a lovely touch!
If you have no clue what to do with your old window shutters, here is a great idea! This person has alternated different coloured window shutters behind the bed as a headboard. Even if they are a little broken, they look stunning positioned in a different way!

How ingenious – love the alternated different coloured window shutters
What I especially like about them is the one broken one. I know one is supposed to throw away or replace broken things, but for me that one broken piece makes the whole thing.
You’re the one with the brains here. I’m watching for your posts.
